Over the past 30 years I have had the pleasure, shall we say of finishing a few crown molding jobs started by home owners. Cutting and installing Crown mold is not exactly something I would consider a job for the beginner woodworker. If you do decide to give it a try I would suggest getting a stick of trim and try some practice cuts. I glanced over this article and a couple things caught my attention. I would go with a larger nail than an 8d to start. Also If you are in a wood framed home you should be able to hit the dbl top plate on the wall and not have to worry about finding the studs. This will make the job much easier and faster.

Also something to keep in mind unless you are using a compound miter saw (which I never use for this). When making your cut for the cope the trim is placed into the saw upside down and backwards to how it is going to be placed for nailing. This gives you the proper profile for the cope.
